Say hello to the petite Lydia, who lives with one of our orphanage partners in Yetebon, Ethiopia. You can count on Lydia to leap with joy into the open arms of the staff, confident that she’ll be caught, hugged, and loved. However, this joy and confidence are products of several years of constant care and provision for her basic needs.
Lydia was abandoned as an infant by her teenage mother, pushed through a hedge of thorn bushes (with thorns as long as 2 inches!) onto the back area of the children’s home where a staff member found her. She would often have nightmares as a result of the physical and emotional pain of her abandonment.
But over time, and with lots of unconditional love, these emotional wounds began to heal, and her ability to trust was eventually restored. Today, Lydia has lots of energy, and loves to play with all of the other children.
Lydia’s big smile is evidence of the importance of provision, protection, instruction, and affection in the life of a child. And that’s what we’re all about at Rice Bowls. Together with your help, we can shoulder the burden of providing healthy meals for these awesome kids, and in turn, the amazing caretakers at our partner orphanages can focus beyond the children’s physical needs. This is what it means to be a small part of something big!
